Mission Impossible

I was sitting up in bed, snuggled warm with pen in hand. In the midst of starting my CalmUp® Journey, the phone rang. My son was halfway to school in 18-degree weather, and his fully charged scooter motor gave out. With eight minutes before the early bell, Mom went to the rescue.

Back in bed and warmed by the fireplace, I picked up my pen and reconsidered the first question of Level I: “How can I…?”

  • How can I move with grace and ease today?
  • How can I best support my loved ones?
  • How can I honor my priorities?

The rest of that question didn’t matter, because I felt like I’d already accomplished it.

IT’S ABOUT YOU:

  1. What’s stopping you from coming up with your own daily “How can I…” question? For inspiration, you can see mine on Twitter.
  2. Imagine yourself warm under the covers just opening your eyes after a good night’s sleep. How can you rethink the way you’ve been starting your days?
  3. What’s your “How can I…” question for today?

What Have I Done?

My newsletter was on its way through cyberspace (click here for the most recent issue of CalmUp® Wellspring Guideposts). Why was I feeling so uncomfortable? I felt pleased about the article and was mentally reviewing what I sent out when, “Oh my gosh, what have I done?”

It hit me that I’d said something that just wasn’t true. Had I been unconscious when I wrote it? Well, yes. Although I feel uncomfortable making a public confession, I realize that doing so is the right action to take regardless of the repercussions.

Here’s my faux pas: under the Quips & Queries section, I thanked those people who responded to my request to submit any photos they’d like to see included in the newsletter. The truth is, nobody responded, and there I was thanking people as if they had shared their material.

I became aware of my behavior and owned the fact that I created a false impression to avoid my feelings of disappointment. By being authentic, the earlier feeling of discomfort began to fade. Although it is painful to look at our darkness, it’s the surest way to get through to the other side.

I’m No Buddha!

CalmUp® photo I of path in India

What do the Buddha and I have in common?

Not much. Sometimes I yell and lose my cool. Don’t you? Somehow I just don’t picture the Buddha behaving like that. I also get frustrated when things don’t go the way I expect. I’m told, “That’s life,” as if that’s going to make the feeling go away.

So how the heck can I tout Peacebuilding?

Well, I’ve got something that the Buddha doesn’t have—the CalmUp® Journey! With the CalmUp® Journey, I can go from freak-out to peace-out in about twenty minutes. What do you do when you lose your composure? How long does it take you to return to equanimity?

Why turn to a daily resource if making a fool of oneself seldom happens?

That’s like asking, “Why bother flossing if dental problems seldom occur?” One reason I recommend turning to a daily resource is for prevention. Similar to a daily habit of dental hygiene to prevent gum disease, by turning to the CalmUp® Journey, you’ll have an asset at your fingertips to help prevent peace-of-mind-decay.

But what if I’m not seeking perfection?
